Max Cady, a psychopathic rapist, is released from prison after serving a brutal fourteen-year sentence. Infused with a thirst for vengeance, he immediately targets Sam Bowden, the former defense attorney who purposefully buried an official document that could have cleared Cady during his original trial. Using his self-educated knowledge of legal loopholes to evade the police, Cady begins an intense campaign of psychological warfare to systematically dismantle Sam’s life, terrorizing his emotionally distant wife Leigh and manipulating his vulnerable teenage daughter Danielle. As the legal system fails to protect them and Sam’s own moral failures come to light, the family is pushed to their absolute limits. The harrowing stalker game escalates from small-town intimidation to a violent, claustrophobic showdown aboard a houseboat trapped in a ferocious storm on the Cape Fear River.
